MALOSSI CRANKSHAFTS FOR VESPA The crankshaft of the Vespa is one of the most delicate and important components of this type of engine, as it has to manage the movements of the connecting rod and piston and regulate the intake through the timing of the semi-shoulder. The
Malossi technical department has focused its attention on these two aspects, creating two versions of the crankshaft and developing innovative solutions of great technical value, starting with the choice of materials, which are, as always, of the highest quality. All
Malossi crankshafts for Vespa are made of aerospace-grade case-hardened steel and vacuum-remelted, a material that is highly resistant to scratching, guaranteed by the certifications required by
Malossi's extremely strict specifications. The "viper head" connecting rod has a shape designed to minimise weight and ensure all the necessary rigidity. Not even the smallest detail has been overlooked. In fact,
Malossi engineers have even worked on the threading of the transmission side of the crankshafts, significantly increasing their strength by using a finer pitch. The position of the key has also been revised in both size and shape so that it no longer affects the threading, contributing to the strength of this cutting-edge solution. The crankshafts are supplied with special nuts, which are much more resistant, to take advantage of the greater resistance offered by the finer thread. ROTARY VALVE CRANKSHAFT In the version designed for rotary valve engines, the intake phase has been created inside the semi-shoulder, in the circular mass structure itself, which has produced a significant inward-facing slot while maintaining a regular external profile. This innovative choice has made it possible to obtain a unique shape that guarantees extremely effective fluid dynamics. Such conspicuous slots have always been one of the most delicate points of Vespa crankshafts when seeking the correct balance.
Malossi has solved this problem by including tungsten inserts in the crankshaft, which are used as counterweights to increase the stability of the shaft itself. FULL-SHOULDERED CRANKSHAFT The
Malossi full-shouldered crankshaft, designed exclusively for Vespa engines modified to use a reed valve intake system instead of the original rotary valve, is the new frontier for Vespa enthusiasts. As with the rotary valve version, optimal balance is guaranteed by tungsten inserts. The circular mass structure is the area that benefits most from this new crankshaft and crankcase configuration, receiving the maximum possible pressure. DIFFERENT VERSIONS Crankshafts with different connecting rod lengths are available for Vespa "small frame" models on which the full shoulder crankshaft will be installed. The crankshaft designed for engines with rotary valve intake has standard stroke and connecting rod length.
