Description

Malossi 28/30mm intake manifold for Vespa PX T5. INTAKE MANIFOLDS The intake manifold is the passageway through which the air-petrol mixture enters the engine via the reed valve. The total efficiency of an engine is calculated as the product of various partial efficiencies, which are: - volumetric efficiency - thermodynamic efficiency - mechanical efficiency. Volumetric efficiency indicates the ratio between the volume of mixture that can be introduced into the combustion chamber and the engine displacement. One of the main factors affecting volumetric efficiency is the friction loss encountered by the incoming fluid (air-petrol mixture) from the air filter to the combustion chamber. Therefore, one of the components that significantly influences this loss is the intake manifold, as all the incoming mixture must pass through it with as little loss as possible. For this reason, it is essential to avoid sudden increases in cross-section and sharp edges along the path of the mixture. Another function of the intake manifold is to act as a fresh charge accumulation chamber, as the mixture column travelling at a certain speed takes a certain amount of time to stop when the reed valve closes, causing the mixture to accumulate in the manifold and compress against the reeds. For this reason, each manifold has its own well-defined speed range within which it delivers maximum performance (tuned manifold). In addition, the manifold supports the carburettor by connecting it to the engine crankcase or cylinder, so it also dampens vibrations transmitted from the crankcase to the carburettor, preventing petrol and air from mixing in the carburettor float chamber. This apparently simple component therefore requires considerable study in order to fully exploit all its qualities, a result that Malossi's engineers have perfectly achieved. Malossi, with its decades of experience in engine fuel systems, has developed a new line of rubber and aluminium alloy manifolds for the new generation of scooters, tested and developed by Malossi's experience department, both on the road and on race tracks. In particular, Malossi rubber manifolds have a composite structure, as they are built from an aluminium insert that is encased in a special plastic material that is resistant to oil and petrol, thus ensuring considerable rigidity of the base for fixing to the crankcase and good elasticity of the manifold body. Products reserved exclusively for competition use in places designated for this purpose in accordance with the regulations of the relevant sporting authorities.
